nice rice unveils a brand-new concept store in Chengdu, relocating from its original ground-floor storefront to a second-floor space. With the expanded scale, the former theatrical setting of “Scenes of Endless Performance” is reimagined. What was once a single, stage-centered composition evolves into a more relaxed, observational experience — shifting from performing on stage to watching the play unfold. Inspired by the leisurely notion of “resting in the shade of a big tree,” the space creates a calmer, more unhurried new scene for watching the show.
Resting in the Shade of a Big Tree
Through a system of structural columns and hanging rods, nice rice constructs a minimalist wooden theatrical installation that runs through the entire space. This gesture gently softens the sharp architectural edges, transforming them into a warm, enveloping “stage” that unfolds lightly within the interior, forming an open and relaxed setting for viewing.
At the same time, a distinctive light-membrane installation projects dappled “tree-shade” patterns onto the ceiling. The shifting interplay between light spots and the wooden stage structure lends the static space a rhythm that feels alive and breathing. By blending the ease of resting beneath a tree with the brand’s simple, natural design language, nice rice uses winding circulation paths and ever-changing light and shadow to connect a walk-in, light-filled theatrical experience full of vitality.
From once building a stage to perform, to now watching the play beneath the trees, the spatial renewal of the Chengdu MixC store transforms the theatrical atmosphere of “Scenes of Endless Performance” from the performer’s stage into the viewer’s everyday setting.
